The Sea Dog restaurant is a modest Moscow establishment that becomes the stage for a clandestine handover of the Chalk of Destiny, the artifact at the heart of the Night Watch's long-prepared plan to alter the course of human history. Located near a metro station, the restaurant is chosen by Gesar, the head of the Moscow Night Watch, for its practical anonymity and its micro-environment of a close-knit, risk-taking community—a model, as he later explains to Anton, of the Watch itself. It is here that Gesar meets Alisher Ganiev, a young Light Magician from Samarkand whose father, a devona courier, has just been killed by the Day Watch, and here that the artifact changes hands, setting the stage for the final confrontation on the roof of the house on stilts.

Setting and Atmosphere

The Sea Dog is a small, cozy establishment, famous for its fish dishes and its shipboard interior. Its six or seven tables are separated by partitions, and the air is filled with smoke. A television with the sound switched off shows free-fall jumps, and a photograph of the same subject hangs on the wall—bodies in bright-colored overalls spread-eagled in flight. The regulars have strange, distinctive faces, all bearing the same indefinable stamp: they are a team, a micro-environment of people who share a specific profile of risk, intense thrills, and little understanding of outsiders. Gesar deliberately chose this setting to illustrate to Anton that the Watch is no different from such a club: every Other who accepts his nature must either join the Watch on his side, becoming a soldier who inevitably risks his life, or live an almost human life without developing his powers.

The Meeting with Alisher

Gesar is sitting in the corner of the restaurant, lazily plucking grapes off a bunch, when Alisher Ganiev walks in. The young man, an olive-skinned Other with substantial but inexperienced powers, goes straight to Gesar's table and sinks to his knees, a gesture of profound respect from the old traditions of Samarkand. He has come to Moscow illegally, carrying the artifact his father died to protect. Gesar instructs him to drive all the customers away gently and unobtrusively, so they can relax and remember the dead man while they wait for the Dark Ones, who are sure to arrive. Alisher obeys, and the two share a meal and memories of the father before the inevitable confrontation.

The Handover of the Chalk

During their meeting, Alisher opens a small bag on his belt and takes out an oblong bundle of coarse fabric, handling it with great care. He places it in Gesar's hand, and the head of the Night Watch closes his fingers over it. When Alisher withdraws his hand, it is empty. Gesar tells him his service is completed. The artifact is the Chalk of Destiny, a small piece of chalk pointed at both ends, worn down by millennia of use by Light Magicians attempting to alter the destiny of the world. It is this chalk that Svetlana will later hold on the roof, poised to rewrite Egor's destiny, and it is this chalk that Anton will ultimately pick up after she chooses to erase rather than rewrite.

Narrative Significance

The Sea Dog restaurant is the site where the novel's central magical artifact is formally transferred from the East to the Moscow Watch, marking the culmination of a twelve-year plan. It is also the location of Gesar's final attempt to explain his philosophy to Anton, using the restaurant's clientele as a metaphor for the Watch's insular, risk-bound nature. The meeting is a direct consequence of the Day Watch's murder of Alisher's father at Kazan Station, and it triggers the chain of events that leads to the climax on the roof. The restaurant's mundane, unremarkable character—a place where a man can eat sturgeon and drink Danish vodka without being noticed—underscores the hidden, everyday nature of the Others' war, a war that is fought not in grand palaces but in the ordinary spaces of Moscow's streets and restaurants.
